Oh hey, it's a Kitten!

I guess being in a giant corporation himself (he was from QANTAS iirc) the people that he sees starting their own successful ventures have also been those who first worked at big companies. When you have a hammer everything looks like a nail :)

"Glenn advised me otherwise. “Work for a big company first and learn how it works,” he advised"

Where's his company?

Thanks Rob.

It wasn't awkward for long, I ended up changing the topic a bit and asking about what their engineers did and whether things will be more automated or computer driving in the future.

Choosing the right place to go is always the hard part. :)

"It’s social courtesy to try and be nice and leave a sense of hope, but in this case, doing so only made it awkward." Lol dude you messed that one up. It sounds like he was trying to give you the opportunity to be "Direct and honest" and just tell him 'thankyou for the offer but we both know that there are probably roles out there that better suit my particular skill set'. Still be polite but tell him that you agree that you won't be working there. That's what I would have done and it is also my two cents.

And as for the startups, I know you and no matter which path you choose you will be able to get wherever you choose to go. The trick is choosing the place that gets you furthest. :)
